Oslo - Historic, picturesque and somewhat isolated, has never been seen as a fashion mecca. Yet, some of the trendiest styles and mixes can be regularly spotted on its streets.

Influenced by the influx of immigrants during the 1990's, Oslo fashion has become tip of the spear. Scarfs, pullovers, boots and leggings make the Winters a fashion wonder. And with the Fall months now upon us (again), the layers, muted colors, subtle patterns and funky footwear are beginning to emerge after the typical short but sweet Norwegian summer. So take a look at Oslo and enjoy the creative fashions that fill its streets....

On the Street...Karl Johan

Karl Johan Gt.......

The rain came back.. and with it came the Wellies and Hunters.... they are everywhere. I was coming back from the Viking Museum with my wife and son and there happened to be a French woman sitting on the bus across from us. My wife, dressed in her Hunters by Jimmy Choo caught her eye. She asked where to get them, because she was so impressed with how the Nordics use them for fashion quoditienne. Again, the typical expression of Nordic form, function and fashion......

Upper Karl Johans gate........................

I fell in love with this outfit and the unique assembly of colours and design. According to this young lady, this dress is a very old bunad (Norwegian National dress). Typically reserved for May 17th (Norwegian Independence Day) or weddings, this was used as fashion quoditienne. Topped off with the pale blue accessories, the muted colors were a playful yet melancholy statement of personal style. If you want to see more bunader, go to my May 17th posts where you will find an array of these beautiful had crafted garments.

Youngstorget........

Colours are coordinated and the long flowing seamed skirt creates a voluminous breath with each purposeful stride. The low clog-like shoes are a perfect personal accent with unique detail and design.

Rosenborggata....

Dark blue cotton skirt with wide embroidered hem, patchworked and frayed mary poppins length coat and turn-of-the-century ankle boots turn a bygone day look into something very, very modern...

Karl Johan.............Leathers, Jeans and Stompers

The hi-hemmed jeans shorts are purposely trimmed above the inside pocket-flap. Another subtle trend that has been growing since the weather has taken a turn for the better...

Kongens gate,...

Now that the weather has sprung to Spring, bikes are everywhere. And they are manned by all ages and all sizes. What moved me about this photo was her delicate lines and poise as she focused on traversing the street on her way to who knows where. Her clothes show the mark of the ever-functional Oslo fashion that allows them to be both nimble and warm and her colourful flats, striped top, and rough & ready, densely stitched leather jacket give her the flexibility and comfort she needs to cycle away. Finally, the ever present scarf frames another typical (or not so ;) Scandinavian profile.

West Side.....

Plaid on plaid, with wingtips and navy slacks with a full break; topped off with a flute-folded pocket square- a bit of sprezzatura elegance..... a classic look that will go on forever...

Jernbanetorget...

At first glance, this may not look like much, but there is a certain detail that shows this young lady put some thought into her theme and colours. Her perfectly fitting tweed jacket, buttoned to show contour, the bootstrap-bunched jeans, and the bold striped skirt used as a tunic-over-jeans show the conscious approach to the style that so many Oslonians manage to make look unplanned and unscripted.

Rosenborggata.......West Side

Loved her simple and functional look, muted hues and of course, the all black Chuck Taylors. The busy flower print topped off with the perennial scarf and dark blue short waisted jacket all work together for one of Oslo's oft used stylish and urban looks....

So well thought out, down to the hammernail boots and gold-buckled watch. A thoroughly cool look that typifies the hipness of Oslo fashion..

Wet and Wellies......

Again, defined by the elements and their natural sense of style, when the rain comes, so come the Wellies and the Slickers. In fact, so enamored are these Norwegians with their Gummies and Rainboots
(predominantly HUNTER), they will bust them out even at the hint of rain. Who would have thought that rainboots could be so,.....

On the Move .....Downtown by Central Station..

So much of Oslo's Style is a response to its climate. Protection from the elements and doing it with personal flair.... At any time in May or June a whipped-up-wind can push a chill down your spine, or if the sun plays peek-a-boo behind some stray clouds, you'll immediately feel the temperture drop a few degrees. Yes, often it's earth tones for solid footwear, durable outerwear and easily on-or-off neckwear (depending on the time of day or the number of clouds overhead).
Practicality and Flexibility is what it's all about.....
